Dimensions

Dimensions define the variable attributes of your products. They’re the backbone of variant management, enabling you to create and organize products with different sizes, colors, materials, and more.

What Are Dimensions?

A dimension is a product attribute that varies across SKUs within a collection. Common examples:
DimensionPurposeExample Values
SizePhysical sizeXS, S, M, L, XL, XXL
ColorVisual appearanceRed, Blue, Black, White
MaterialCompositionCotton, Polyester, Leather
LengthMeasurement variantShort, Regular, Long
WidthFit typeNarrow, Standard, Wide
FlavorProduct varietyVanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry
ScentFragrance typeLavender, Citrus, Unscented

Dimensions vs. Other Attributes

Understanding when to use dimensions:
Use Dimensions WhenUse Other Fields When
Attribute varies within a product lineAttribute is unique to each SKU
You need to filter by this attributeIt’s just informational
Products share the attribute valuesValues are product-specific
You want to generate SKU variantsYou’re describing a single product
Example:
  • “Size” should be a dimension (T-Shirts come in S, M, L)
  • “Weight” might be a SKU field (each product has one specific weight)

Creating Dimensions

From the Dimensions Dashboard

1

Navigate to Dimensions

Go to SKUsDimensions tab
2

Click Create Dimension

Click the Create Dimension button
3

Configure the Dimension

Enter dimension details:
  • Name: Display name (e.g., “Size”)
  • Code: Short identifier (e.g., “SZ”)
  • Collection: Which collection this belongs to
4

Add Values

Add possible values for this dimension (covered below)
5

Save

Save the dimension

From a Collection

1

Open the Collection

Navigate to the collection’s detail page
2

Go to Dimensions Tab

Select the Dimensions tab
3

Add Dimension

Click Add Dimension and configure

Managing Dimension Values

Values are the specific options for a dimension.

Adding Values

1

Open the Dimension

Click on a dimension to open its detail view
2

Click Add Value

In the values section, click Add Value
3

Enter Value Details

  • Name: Display name (e.g., “Medium”)
  • Code: Short code (e.g., “M”)
  • Sort Order: Position in lists (optional)
4

Save

Value is added to the dimension

Editing Values

  1. Click on a value to edit
  2. Modify name, code, or sort order
  3. Save changes
Changing a value’s name doesn’t change existing SKUs that use it. The relationship is by ID, not name.

Deleting Values

Values can only be deleted if:
  • No SKUs currently use the value
  • No active references exist
If SKUs use a dimension value, you must update or archive those SKUs before deleting the value.

Reordering Values

Set the sort order to control how values appear:
  • In dropdowns
  • In filter lists
  • In generated SKU names
Example sort order for sizes:
ValueSort Order
XS1
S2
M3
L4
XL5
XXL6

Multi-Level Dimensions

Some dimensions benefit from hierarchical organization.

When to Use Multi-Level

Use hierarchical values when:
  • Values have natural groupings
  • You need to filter at different levels
  • Reporting requires rollup capabilities
Example - Color with shades:
Color
├── Blue
│ ├── Navy
│ ├── Royal Blue
│ └── Sky Blue
├── Red
│ ├── Crimson
│ ├── Burgundy
│ └── Scarlet
└── Green
    ├── Forest
    ├── Olive
    └── Mint

Creating Multi-Level Values

1

Create Parent Value

Add the top-level value (e.g., “Blue”)
2

Add Child Values

When adding new values, select the parent:
  • Name: “Navy”
  • Parent: “Blue”
3

Continue Building Hierarchy

Add all child values under their parents

Using Multi-Level Dimensions

  • SKUs are assigned to the most specific (leaf) value
  • Filtering by “Blue” shows all SKUs in any shade of blue
  • Reports can aggregate at any level

Dimension Codes

Codes are short identifiers used in:
  • SKU code generation
  • System integrations
  • Compact displays

Best Practices for Codes

GuidelineGoodBad
Keep short”M”, “BLU""MEDIUM”, “BLUECOLOR”
Be consistentAll 2-3 charsMix of lengths
Avoid special chars”NVY""N/B”
Use uppercase”XL""xl”

Dimensions and SKU Generation

Dimensions power the SKU Generator, which creates variant combinations automatically.

How It Works

  1. Define dimensions with values
  2. Open SKU Generator
  3. Select which values to include
  4. Generator creates all combinations
Example:
  • Size: S, M, L (3 values)
  • Color: Red, Blue (2 values)
  • Result: 6 SKUs (3 × 2)

Naming Templates

Use dimension codes in templates:
Name: {collection} - {Size} - {Color}
Code: {collection_code}-{Size}-{Color}
Result:
  • Name: “T-Shirts - Medium - Blue”
  • Code: “TSH-M-BLU”

Dimension Filtering

Dimensions appear as filters throughout Tether:

Demand Forecasting

Tri-State Filtering

Dimension filters support three states:
StateAction
IncludeShow only SKUs with this value
ExcludeHide SKUs with this value
IndifferentDon’t filter by this value

Common Dimension Patterns

Typical dimensions:
  • Size (XS through XXL)
  • Color (brand-specific palette)
  • Length (Short, Regular, Long)
  • Fit (Slim, Regular, Relaxed)
Tips:
  • Use consistent size scales
  • Include size charts in documentation
  • Consider regional size variations
Typical dimensions:
  • Flavor (Vanilla, Chocolate, etc.)
  • Size (Small, Medium, Large or oz/ml)
  • Pack Size (Single, 6-pack, 12-pack)
Tips:
  • Include unit information
  • Consider dietary variants (Regular, Sugar-Free)
Typical dimensions:
  • Storage (64GB, 128GB, 256GB)
  • Color (Space Gray, Silver, Gold)
  • Configuration (Base, Pro, Max)
Tips:
  • Use technical specifications in codes
  • Be precise with measurements
Typical dimensions:
  • Size (Twin, Full, Queen, King)
  • Color/Pattern (Solid, Striped, Floral)
  • Material (Cotton, Linen, Microfiber)
Tips:
  • Include standard measurements
  • Note regional naming differences

Troubleshooting

Cannot Delete Dimension Value

Cause: SKUs are using this value Solution:
  1. Find SKUs using this value (filter by dimension)
  2. Either update SKUs to use a different value
  3. Or archive the SKUs
  4. Then delete the value

Dimension Not Appearing in Filters

Cause: No SKUs have values for this dimension Solution:
  1. Assign dimension values to SKUs
  2. Or use SKU Generator to create variants

Duplicate Codes

Cause: Same code used in multiple dimensions Solution:
  • Codes only need to be unique within a dimension
  • If this causes confusion, use more specific codes
